Benefits at Clif Bar

Clif Bar is Family and Employee Owned

Our company IS our people.

We’ve created award-winning, LEED-certified, people-friendly environments where our employees can grow and succeed as they live the lives they want to live. We value laughter and fun as integral qualities in our workplace; we celebrate one another; and we gauge our success not on one, but five bottom lines. We call them our Five Aspirations—Sustaining Our People, Business, Community, Brands, and the Planet—and they shape every part of life at Clif Bar, including our benefits program.

We’ve added holistic and innovative programs to more traditional offerings to create a benefits philosophy that meets people where they are, no matter what stage in life, and welcomes diverse backgrounds and individual needs. We’re always looking for new ways to invest in our people, asking frequently, “What other benefits could we be offering? What haven’t we thought of yet?”

Fiscal Fitness for the 21st Century

Clif Bar employees are a diverse group—foodies, makers, animal lovers, parents, musicians, humanitarians, nature lovers, and a whole lot more. One thing we share is the opportunity to become owners* of the company. Clif Bar’s most unique offering is our Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), a generous retirement benefit that reflects our work together and links to the success of our company.

“We appreciate everything Clif people do to make this company thrive and grow,” says Gary Erickson, Owner and Co-CEO. “We wanted to provide them with a retirement benefit that recognizes the difference they make in the company’s success.”

Employees can also sign on for a 401(k) plan (with a 100% match up to 5% of annual earnings), and did we mention our annual incentive plan? Everyone, at every level of the company, is eligible. And don’t forget to sign up for one-on-one planning sessions to help you set the stage for retirement.

Work - Live - Play

Everyone needs time off, and Clif Bar serves up something beyond the ordinary. Beyond PTO. After seven years of service, employees earn a multi-week sabbatical. You can travel to far-away places or enjoy a staycation, your choice. Clifsters have chosen to learn the ukulele, go fishing with dad, do community service in Florida, eat pizza in Napoli, and create a backyard wonderland for the kids. Your sabbatical, your dream. Every seven years.

Clif Bar also helps you stay chill between sabbaticals. Whether you want to share a fun run with your daughter, do a Spartan race with your friends, or challenge yourself with a full marathon, our athletic stipend covers entry fees (up to $350/year) for athletic events you love. When Mother Nature calls, you can go visit our beloved parks with help from Clif Bar’s National and State Parks Pass reimbursement program. And each Clif Bar location has its own unique events and traditions, from barbeques to film nights to community gardens, to keep daily life fresh.

Growing Your Career (Learning Opportunities for You and Yours)

Clif Bar creates environments filled with original ideas, where our people can grow and succeed along with our company. In-house learning programs offer classes and experiences to help people gain new knowledge and skills throughout the year. We also support life-long learning with our tuition assistance program. As a matter of fact, we want to share our love of learning with the next generation, too, so each year Clif Bar Family Foundation awards up to 10 post-secondary school scholarships for children of Clif employees.

'Insuring' Good Health

You’ll find that per-pay-period benefit costs are low here (on average, Clif Bar pays 86%), and employees can choose from several comprehensive medical plans. Dental and vision, too. We also offer life insurance, disability coverage, and an employee assistance program (free and confidential) for help in dealing with issues that affect life and work. And to help you feel your best day in and day out, you’ll find on-site wellness services, too (think a chiropractor or physical therapist to help smooth out the kinks).

Cool for You and the Planet

Our business has been climate neutral for more than 15 years—Clif Bar uses 100% green power for electricity at all our facilities—and we want to help you reduce your carbon footprint, too. Our Cool Commute program offers incentives for leaving your car home, or switching to a fuel-efficient/low emission vehicle. We’ll even help if you’d like to cycle to work. And our Cool Home program makes it easier and more affordable when you want to make earth-friendly improvements at home.

It's All About Family

Love—and family—come in all shapes and sizes, and we believe in sharing the love. From adoption and infertility assistance to paid parental leave, we actively support families of all kinds. Clif Bar was honored to win the BRIDGE Family First Award in 2019 for implementing family-friendly workplace practices, and providing opportunities for a sustainable work/life balance.

It's All About Giving Back - Showing Up for Our Extended Family

Teamwork makes the dream work. Community is one of Clif Bar’s five bottom lines, and as a company we’re committed to volunteering over 10,000 hours every year. We encourage employees to volunteer—on company time. CLIF CORPS hands-on community service can be done during regular work hours for the local nonprofit of your choice. Additionally, Clif Bar will match donations to your best-loved nonprofit groups up to $2,000, and you can donate 1,000 bars per year to the nonprofit(s) closest to your heart.

Want to give more? Employees are eligible to volunteer with In Good Company, an alliance of values-minded businesses that come together for week-long, hands-on projects around the country. The program grew out of Clif Bar’s long tradition of community service, and gives employees the chance to build community with other employees, our nonprofit partners, and local volunteers. Since 2008, more than 600 people from 50 companies have volunteered with dozens of nonprofit groups from coast to coast.

Want to Work for a Different Kind of Company?

Clif Bar Owner and Co-CEO Kit Crawford sums up our big-picture thinking: “We’re working to run a different kind of company: the kind of place we’d want to work, that makes the kind of food we’d like to eat, and that strives for a healthier, more sustainable world––the kind of world we’d like to pass on to our children.”
