Though Clif Bar & Company makes nutritious food, we also believe deeply that our actions should nourish people, planet and communities.
For years we've supported communities impacted by natural disasters by helping to provide a "second response"—after the heroic first responders have completed their crucial work, when the news coverage has ceased and the hard work of rejuvenating communities has just begun. Now we’ve created a fund dedicated solely to supporting communities impacted by natural disasters.
For Those Who Can't Ask for Help
The CLIF Second Responder Fund’s first recipient, the Butte Humane Society, will receive $1.5 million to help build a new state-of-the-art animal shelter and clinic that will serve the surrounding communities. In the aftermath of the Camp Fire, BHS cared for dozens of burned cats, helped to reunite people with their pets, provided ongoing assistance to more than 16,000 animals and distributed approximately 750 tons of pet food, litter and supplies to displaced owners.
It’s estimated the fire impacted more than 20,000 animals, with some still in the organization’s care.
“Anyone who has ever had a pet understands the deep companionship they bring. They’re a member of the family,” said Kit Crawford, co-CEO of Clif Bar & Company, where many Clifsters—including Kit—bring their dogs daily to our dog-friendly headquarters. “They need our help too.”
Groundbreaking for the new 25,000-square-foot facility, which will unite several smaller and dispersed BHS locations onto a single 10-acre site in Butte County, is slated for the first half of 2020. In addition to expanding space for the animal shelter, veterinary care and pet therapy program, the new campus also will serve as a model for animal relief during future natural disasters, serving as a local and regional disaster support hub.
